The trip to Rome for my dad’s 79th birthday in October 2023 was one of those experiences that will stay with us all forever. I’m usually the one out climbing mountains, mountain biking, or off on some other epic adventure, so when the idea of taking a break and spending time with my family in one of the greatest cities in the world was floated, I was all in. Rome is a city that holds a timeless allure, with its ancient ruins, vibrant streets, and unparalleled food scene, but this trip turned out to be so much more than just another vacation.

The whole family came together to mark the occasion—my mom, dad, brother, his wife, and all the nieces and nephews. As soon as we landed, it felt like magic. It wasn’t just about the landmarks, the history, or the beautiful cobblestone streets (though those certainly helped). It was the people, the shared moments, and the stories that would unfold over meals and as we wandered through the Eternal City.

Our days were filled with adventures, starting with feasts at some of the best restaurants in the city. One of my favorite meals was a massive spread of pasta, freshly made gnocchi, and an endless selection of wines. The laughter around the table was contagious. Even my nieces, who were more interested in their gelato than their plates, couldn’t help but join in. We found hidden gems for meals, from cozy trattorias tucked away on side streets to famous spots where the food practically melted in your mouth.

We also took the time to see all of the typical sights. Walking through the Colosseum was surreal, imagining what it would have been like centuries ago, with gladiators battling in front of roaring crowds. The Pantheon left me in awe, with its incredible oculus letting the sunlight pour in, reminding us of the engineering genius of ancient Rome. And, of course, we made a pilgrimage to the Vatican, marveling at the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica. As a family, we were there not just to check off the list of sights, but to experience each one fully, taking our time, soaking in the culture, and finding moments to reflect.

For me, this trip was more than just a change of scenery. It was a chance to reflect on my dad’s life. At 79, he’s lived a full and rich life—one that’s seen the highs and lows of the world and traveled to corners that few ever see. Here we were, celebrating him in the heart of Rome, a city that has been a symbol of life and rebirth for centuries. The more we explored, the more I realized how deeply connected we all are to the history around us—and how lucky I was to have my dad with us, creating new memories.

Rome has this way of pulling you into its rhythm. Whether it was sipping espresso on a sunny terrace, watching the sun dip below the horizon over the Tiber River, or simply taking in the sights and sounds of the bustling piazzas, every moment seemed to be wrapped in a sense of timelessness. It was the perfect backdrop for a family celebration of my dad.

The more we wandered the streets of Rome, the more it felt like the world slowed down. Between sightseeing and meals, we shared stories. We talked about family history, reminisced about the years past, and laughed about the silly things that always seem to come up when we’re all together. It was these moments—so simple, so genuine—that really made the trip unforgettable.

It was hard not to think of how fortunate we were. My dad has lived through so much—his story is one of perseverance and joy, and getting to see that celebrated in such an incredible way felt like a gift. We had the chance to stop and reflect on all he’s done, all he’s been through, and the legacy he’s built. That thought was never far from our minds during the trip: how blessed we are to have this time together, in such a meaningful place, experiencing Rome in a way we would never forget.

Rome, with its history, its food, and its energy, became more than just the backdrop for a birthday celebration. It was the setting for an experience that drew us closer together and allowed us to reflect on the preciousness of time. We weren’t just celebrating my dad’s 79 years—we were celebrating the gift of family and the incredible life he’s had. And for me, it was a reminder of how important it is to take time for the people we love, to share in moments of joy, and to appreciate the simple, meaningful experiences that shape our lives.
